Simple Dremel DigiLab 3D45 Review – Worth Buying or Not?

Dremel DigiLab 3D45 Review - 3DPrinterly

Dremel is a company most famous for always introducing unique ideas of machinery in the market. They have a great reputation as a toolmaker, with its items acquiring various awards from Popular Mechanics and special tools and building sites and publications.

When you look towards the top line of 3D printers out there, for a professional home setting, study hall and so on, your 3D printer will need to meet a set of criteria that many can’t live up to.

The Dremel DigiLab 3D45 was designed with a goal in mind and being reliable and functional was definitely a part of that. Being able to get consistently high quality prints is not an easy task in the usual sense, but it’s definitely possible.

Choosing a 3D printer can be quite the challenge, so I decided to give a simple, yet in-depth review on the DigiLab 3D45, looking at the features, benefits, downsides, specs and what people who already have it are saying about this 3D printer.

Automated 9-Point Levelling System

Automating parts of your 3D printing process makes things that little bit easier. The DigiLab 3D45 has an automated leveling system which accounts for and detects the smallest discrepancies, allowing you to get more successful, high quality prints.

It is an automated 9-point leveling system with a built-in automatic leveling sensor, with the aim to bring you serious precision and reliable printing over several years of your journey.

Includes Heated Print Bed

We need a good heated print bed to print certain types of materials, or to help that bed adhesion. This 3D printer comes with a heated build plate which heats up to 100°C.

Built-In HD 720p Camera

An HD camera that is actually built-in to the 3D printer is an awesome feature that gives you the ability to monitor prints from anywhere. As long as you are set up with the Cloud software, you can access the incorporated 720p camera.

Not only can you view the printing process, but also make time-lapse recordings with the captured film. You can even have clients and others watch the printing process.

Cloud-Based Slicer

Along with the built-in camera, you have access to Dremel Print Cloud, the cloud-based slicer specially made for Dremel 3D printers.

Connectivity Through USB and Wi-Fi Remotely

Network Friendly – with Wi-Fi, Ethernet and USB connectivity. Also equipped with static IP and Proxy for quick and easy network set-up.

Fully Enclosed With Plastic Door

It is a fully enclosed 3D printer along with a see through plastic door so you can keep an eye on your prints. This helps with improving print quality and delivering a quieter printing operation.

4.5″ Full Color Touch Screen

The large, full-color touch screen makes it easy and intuitive to navigate and operate the printer functions and settings. This built-in touchscreen is very responsive to touch and also helps in loading filament.

Award Winning 3D Printer

Award Winning 3D Printer 2018-2020 PCMag Editors’ Choice Award & All3DP Best 3D Printer for Schools Award, showing just how respected and reliable this 3D printer is.

There aren’t many 3D printers out there that get awards, so I’m sure you can appreciate this feature of the DigiLab 3D45.

World-Class Lifetime Dremel Customer Support

You’re getting a specialized team who assist in supporting customers to have a smooth 3D printing experience. If you require assistance at any time or need some advice about your printer, they will be happy to help out.

Heated Build Plate

The heated build plate reaches temperatures of up to 100°C which is high enough for most 3D printing materials out there. It allows you to use the Dremel filament of PLA, ECO-ABS, PETG & Nylon.

Automated 9-Point Leveling System

The in-built automated leveling system consists of a 9-point check, resulting in a nicely leveled 3D printer surface, ready for 3D prints. A good leveling system is ideal for getting great first layers, which has the biggest impact on whether a print is successful or not.

Direct Drive All-Metal Extruder

The direct drive, all-metal extruder is clog resistant and delivers smooth 3D prints. This high-powered extruder heats up to 280°C for flexibility in different print materials.

Filament Run-Out Detection

The filament run-out detection resumes printing where you left off when filament runs out. Rather than have to restart the print for the ground up, this continues the print you already have going, saving you time and filament.

  • Print quality is very good and it’s easy to use as well
  • Has powerful software along with being user-friendly
  • Prints through a USB thumb drive via Ethernet, Wi-Fi, and USB
  • Has a safely secured design and body
  • Compared to other printers, it is relatively quiet and less noisy
  • Easier to set up and use as well
  • Provides a 3D comprehensive ecosystem for education
  • The removable glass plate allows you to remove prints easily

As compared to other printers of the same caliber, the number of filament colors is limited. They advertise four main types of filament, being PLA, ECO-ABS, Nylon & PETG.

The built-in touchscreen also has some issues. The printer couldn’t print other materials well and the webcam’s result was also not so good.

The heating element also wasn’t hot enough to purge the filament. The drive motor doesn’t extrude at times and the filament also gets stuck. These manufacturing errors can prove to be very inconvenient to the user.

Using third party filament won’t void the entire warranty of the Dremel 3D45 3D printer, but it will void the warranty on the nozzle. Unfortunately, the nozzle is sold together with the heating block so the cost to replace the nozzle can be around $50-$60.

Dremel filament can get very pricey and is definitely going to cost more than general 3D printer filament. For example, 1KG of PETG filament usually costs around $25, but 1KG of Dremel PETG goes for around $35.

Most 3D printers sell nozzles separately for extremely cheap, so this isn’t an ideal feature of this 3D printer.

Customer Reviews

The printer proved to be a great hit among its user mainly because of its great precision in printing. Not only this, but the printer was also able to print many different materials as well, with one of them being nylon.

Moreover, most users found it easy to operate and also fairly simple to assemble. The built-in camera allowed the user to check their printing progress and this feature was hence appreciated a lot by many people.

The live camera view and ease in the use made this printer one of the best printers for beginners. People preferred using it not only for professional but also for personal and educational purposes.

The removable glass plate made it easy to take prints off without them getting stuck. The printer provided most of its customers with the satisfactory printing quality.

However, some manufacturing flaws were a bit alarming for the purchasers. The printer did not prove to be very reliable during extensive printing hours. Few counterparts were not of so good quality and broke down after some time of use.

Some users found the touchscreen not so responsive. The printer sometimes tends to get stuck and stops printing until rebooted. It also gets disconnected from the Wi-Fi network which can cause inconvenience to the user.

For most people though, operation is smooth from unboxing to getting that final high quality print, so don’t let a few negative reviews deter you from investing into a high quality 3D printer.

The Dremel DigiLab 3D45 printer is a suitable printer for beginners as well as people who are more inclined towards using it for study. Its several features have proved to be quite user-friendly.

It can be a good longtime investment if the printer’s abilities match your requirement. Customer support is also very helpful and cooperative. The provision of live camera feed was a unique feature and was proved to be popular among the buyers.

Moreover, its versatility and precision in printing materials, makes it one of the distinguished printers in the market.
